Summer season has set in making your skin feel dry all over. The external weather has a huge impact on the body. The hot weather will make the skin feel itchy and few will even have prickly heat and rashes on the body. The skin gets tanned due to the hot sun and all effort is placed to protect your skin. The feet is the least focused area , as a result feet skin becomes dry and starts to crack.

It is said generally that a girls age is identified by her feet. Basically if the feet has no cracks it reflects her age. You can also make this difference by taking care of your feet and make it look younger and pretty this summer.

You can practice a few tips to take care of your feet at home.

    • Wash your feet when you are back home. Your feet too is exhausted after a long days work and standing, carrying all your weight and moving around. You need to pamper your feet .
    • Soak your feet in a wide basin containing lukewarm water with salt in it. This will provide relaxation to your body and all the dirt will be soaked.     • You can experiment by placing 10 to 12 soft pebbles in the bottom of the basin such that you can rub your feet over them. This provides soothing feeling to your legs.
    • After soaking time, scrub your legs with a soft brush or bathing sponge to remove all the old dead skin. Wash your feet and wipe off moisture with a soft cloth. Clean areas between each toes also.
    • Trim your nails with a nail cutter. Use a filer to level the nails. Press the cuticle back with the help of the file in the nail cutter to promote growth of nail. If your nails are soft , you should trim and file before soaking.
    • Bleach your feet and toes with lemon juice. This will cleanse your skin too. Use a mild nail polish remover to avoid nail damage.
    • Apply moisturizing cream over your feet prior to going to bed. Coconut oil is a good alternative for moisturizing your feet. You can follow this schedule alternate day.. If oil is applied wear socks such that your clothes are not stained with oil.
    • Foot massage is recommended once a week. Apply almond oil / Olive oil and spread over your feet. The massage will relax your feet and the nerve and muscles will be activated by soft gentle movements up and down your feet for 5 minutes.
    • Wear socks to avoid dry dust or further cracks to your feet. Use a medicated cream at nights to heal the cracks. You can also apply Vaseline liberally on the cracks prior to going to bed.
    • If your work involves outdoor activities wear closed foot wear to avoid the heat and keep your legs protected.
    • You can schedule pedicure by visiting the beauty parlour once a fortnight.
    • If your footwear smells due to bad odor problem , apply talcum powder onto your feet prior to wearing socks. This will minimize the smell. Wear socks of good material and change socks daily. Dip your socks in antiseptic solution like Dettol to prevent microbial infection.
    • Ayurvedic foot massage helps in treating sleeplessness, builds up blood circulation and preserves good eyesight. Medicated oil is used for massage over the feet with a focus on the energy points, in cyclic motions the massage helps in relaxing and lightening the lower extremities and provides physical relief and swelling. The massage techniques used in the ayurvedic foot massage consists of tapping, kneading and gentle pinching, as well as conventional massage strokes. The Vaidyar assesses the individual’s health status, nature and personality and decides the mode and duration of the massage.

  • For extremely dry skin Ayurveda suggests application of Aloe vera gel on your feet daily  to keep your feet moisturized and free of diseases of athlete’s foot.
  • If you have problem of corn, heat a garlic clove to brown color in hot oil. Place the clove on the corn affix it with a band aid. Follow this for a week and the corn on your feet will fall off.

People with diabetics and psoriasis should take extra effort to keep their skin free of infections and wounds. Regularly clean feet and keep it moisturized to prevent dryness and cracks. Walks, yoga or some light exercise increases blood circulation in the feet and legs.

WHY DOES NOSE BLEEDING OCCUR?

With the onset of summer season it is a common sight to see children and elders have an experience of nose bleeding. Usually only one nostril will bleed. In summer during traveling hot waves are common and the nose is the organ that intakes hot air.

Why does nose bleeding occurNose bleeding is known as Epistaxis problem.  In Ayurveda nose bleeding is known as naasagata rakta pitta. It creates panic for children and individuals who are experiencing it the first time. On seeing blood all of a sudden they will feel dizzy, disturbed and would prefer to be indoors for the rest of the day.

It is not a health problem, so do not worry. Understand the basic causes and how to prevent nose bleeding from occurring.

Why does nose bleeding occur?

There are a great many tiny blood vessels in the delicate lining of the nose. These small capillaries are easily broken. Any number of things can rupture some of these small vessels and cause a nose bleed.

The blood coming from the nose during a nosebleed can be a continuous stream or a small trickle. It may look as if you are losing a lot of blood, but not much blood is actually lost during the typical nosebleed.

As bleeding from nose comes on suddenly and without warning, it can be unnerving, nosebleeds can usually be managed easily at home. Gently wash your nose with cold water and wipe the area dry.

How to stop bleeding from the nose?

1. Calmly sit down in an upright position, do not lean back in the chair. This will help to keep blood from going down the back of your throat. Breathe through your mouth.

2. Tilt your head forward (not backward).

3. Place your thumb and forefinger on either side of the bridge of your nose and pinch the soft part of your nose firmly for ten minutes without releasing. Apply pressure firmly enough to slow bleeding, but not so strongly as to cause discomfort. Pressure decreases the blood flow through the affected area, slowing bleeding.why does nose bleeding occur

You can also place a cold compress / ice cubes on the bridge of your nose. Secondary measure as ice pack may not be available around when nose bleeding starts. Help constrict the local blood vessels.

4. After ten minutes, release the nostrils slowly and check to see if the bleeding has stopped. Avoid touching or blowing your nose. If the bleeding has not stopped, apply pressure for another ten-minute period.

5. If your nose is still bleeding steadily after twenty minutes of pressure, call your Doctor for further guidance.

HOW TO PREVENT NOSE BLEEDING IN SUMMER?

What are the Preventive measures of nose bleeding?

  • Do not go out in the hot weather. Cover your head with a cap and cover the nose with a folded kerchief or cotton cloth to avoid hot air coming in.how to prevent nose bleeding in summer
  • Placing Air conditioners and Air coolers will maintain some humidity in the air.
  • Avoid picking your nose and blowing your nose hard if it’s blocked due to cold and dried mucus.
  • Avoid alcohol, smoking and hot drinks because they expand the blood cells in the lining of your nose
  • After the bleeding stops, the blood clots inside the nose. Do not try to remove the dried mucus and blood. Clean nose when wet or with a wet paper towel.

Home remedies and Ayurvedic reference for nose bleeding:

  • Stop nosebleed by dipping a cotton ball or plain sterile gauze with white vinegar and place it in your nose. Leave it in place for at least ten minutes. The acid of the vinegar will gently cauterize the inside of the nose and stop the bleeding.
  • Applying cold compress or ice cubes above the nose or across the bridge of the nose will also help control the bleeding.
  • Place a cloth or cotton gauze dipped in lemon juice, provides excellent relief.
  • Place a cotton gauze dipped in rosewater or onion juice cloth dipped in Onion juice and place over nostrils.
  • Juice of fresh coriander leaves can be used as nasal drops.
  • Soak two figs (Anjeer) in water overnight. Eating them with water in the morning, helps to overcome nose bleeding.


Diet to be followed:

  • Avoid spicy and items that give heat to the body.
  • Consume coolants , coconut water and butter milk.
  • Keep away from stress and tensions.
  • Body and mind requires rest, have a sound sleep at night.

They enjoy the whole day indulging in activities like playing, attending weddings, getting enrolled in summer classes to keep them occupied and away from the hot sun. The little exposure to the sunrays and heat is sufficient for health problems to develop.

Summer evenings are spent by going out for long strolls , to enjoy the cool breeze. Refreshments are taken and this is another reason to have stomach disorders and miss your vacation fun.

You need to take extra precaution and avoid health hazards. Listed here are the common summer health problems and the precautionary methods to prevent it from occurring.

Sunstroke

Sunstroke, commonly known as heat stroke is a serious medical condition that sometimes may turn out life-threatening. In sunstroke, the body’s heat-regulating mechanism fails due to overexposure to high temperature in hot weather. Hence, body’s core temperature rises which can lead to internal body damage. You will observe high body temperature, dry skin, dehydration, confusion, and short-rapid breathing.

To prevent sunstroke, limit your outdoor activities particularly during hottest part of day. Drink plenty of water and juices to hydrate your body. Take time to get adjusted with new weather, so that body’s temperature regulating system gets used to new climate.

Food poisoning

As summer is a time for outing and traveling for children, cases of food poisonings are reported at its maximum. Functions and outing schedules involve eating outside food and drinking contaminated water or road side refreshments. Mostly all these things are prepared under unhygienic kitchen conditions or the environment will not meet standards. High temperature favors fastest growth of bacteria in food stuff and can result in food poisoning.

Always carry drinking water from home. Consume coconut water which is readily available at all tourist places. Sliced cucumber is also cooling. In case of eating or drinking outside, make sure the vendor maintains cleanliness at each and every step of food preparation and serving. Avoid overeating during summer to remain active especially during parties and weddings you will have good food around you.

Dehydration

How to overcome summer health problemsWhen you are out on a sunny day ,water levels in the body decline through sweating and breathing hot air. As the temperature increases externally you feel tired and exhausted. Few people start having headaches resulting in vomiting sensation. Dehydration leads to high chances of heatstroke. Keep drinking water in between to avoid feeling dehydrated. Drink plenty of fluids to maintain body fluid level. Minimize alcohol consumption as it can lead to fluid loss.

Children are affected the maximum as their body is unable to adjust with temperature changes. Your child may become busy with games and will have to be reminded about consuming water  and fruit juices in between the outing schedules.

Skin damage
Summer is the time when sun is the hottest. When you go out on a sunny day you can get exposed to harmful Ultraviolet (UV) radiation . Studies indicate that UV rays cause wrinkles, premature ageing and even skin cancer.

To avoid UV induced skin damage, apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or more before going outside and re-apply two to three times in a day to minimize sun exposure.

Wear loose fitting clothes that cover hands and legs entirely . Wear a large hat to cover the back of the neck. People with scanty hair or no hair should be extremely careful to cover their head. A common sight is people visit pilgrim spots and shave their hair as an offering to God.

Eye damage

During summer the sun is hot and there is hot wind blowing around which is dusty too. Strong UV rays in summer leads to eye damage. Wear sunglasses providing 100% UV protection while going outside. Remember to wear sunglasses especially near reflective surfaces like water and while you are driving.

Hair damage

Like the rest of your body, your hair needs some extra attention too. Long-term exposure to the sun can leave your hair, dry and brittle. Oil your hair and scalp twice weekly. Use moisturizing shampoo. Cover your hair with a cotton scarf to avoid split ends.

Prickly heat

Excessive sweating

Excessive sweating in hot and humid weather gives rise to an itchy, bumpy rash with prickly sensation or sometimes results in small blisters.
Simply keep affected area in cool environment. Bath frequently and wear loose fitting cotton clothes that absorb sweat easily. Use appropriate talcum powder or prickly heat powder to relieve prickly heat. Don’t use moisturizer on affected area as it can prolong rash. If the spread of prickly heat rashes are severe consult the doctor.

Bad odor of sweat Sweating or Perspiration is the body’s natural way to get rid from overheating and keep your body cool. Hot weather increases sweating process and bacterial growth imparts very bad smell to body.

Use cotton clothes as they allow the skin to get enough air. Take bath twice a day with antiseptic soap and change clothes twice a day to prevent bacterial growth. Use deodorant while going outside to suppress bad smell.

Nose bleeding:

Nose bleeding is a common sight during hot summer . Prevent nose bleeding by covering your head with a cap and your face over the nose with a kerchief or cotton cloth. Avoid hot air coming in contact with your nostrils, as the capillaries will not rupture due to extreme hot air and weather.Do not panic. Press your nostril for 5 mins and sit upright on a chair. The bleeding will stop and you can wash your face and nose to clear the blood.Use ice pack as compress if available.

Fungal infection on Skin

Fungal infection on Skin is the largest organ of the body and skin infections are very common in summer due to the weather and constant sweating. You need to take extra care of your skin due to the spread of summer boils on the body , heat rashes, prickly heat, insect bites, fungal and viral infections can affect the skin. Excessive sweating and moisture create perfect environment for growth of bacteria and fungi. Hence skin infections are more common during summer.

How to overcome heat this summerSummer season is the time for exams and in the holidays people go out on vacations. Time for trips, visit of relatives, hectic shopping. The risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke rises along with the temperature and humidity. Heat illnesses occur when the body’s cooling mechanism becomes overloaded.

To overcome exhaustion and the effects of summer heat simple steps can be followed.

  • First and foremost Hydrate your body. Drink lots of water at least 10 to 12 glasses of water. Water is a natural drink with no sugars in it. Keep sipping water in intervals even if you are not thirsty. If you are feeling thirsty it is an indication of dehydration. Carry a bottle of water when you go out from home.
  • Wear loose fitting, cotton clothes. Wear loose and full sleeved clothes to protect the body from the scorching sun. If you are working indoor then you can opt for short sleeve clothes.
  • Use an umbrella when you go out in the sun. You can avoid the hot sun by selecting light color clothes and umbrella. Light colors reflect heat.  Dark colors absorbs heat.
  • Use a cap or hat to avoid the heat. Possible cover the back of your neck. This is the area if neglected can cause disturbance to your health. Women these days are covering their faceupto nose completely to avoid the heat.
  • How to overcome heat this summerHave fruits , fresh fruit juice. Have fresh slices of cucumber, it is cooling.  Do not skip breakfast or lunch in summer when your schedule demands you going outdoors.  Eat healthy food and maintain good diet.
  • Wear sunglasses, helmets and women can wear gloves to prevent sun tan.
  • Use prickly heat powder to avoid sudden burst of rashes. Use a sunscreen lotion to prevent redness, itchy feeling and sunburns.
  • Take bath twice daily to remove all the salts settled due to sweating. Your skin becomes clear and you will feel relaxed.
  • Avoid liquids that contain caffeine, alcohol, or large amounts of sugar.
  • Preferably avoid outdoor activities if possible and try to complete the tasks before 10.30 am and proceed after 5.30 pm.
  • Sweating is a way to keep body cool. Sweating leads to pungent odors. You can keep away the bad odor by using deodorants.
  • Indoors use light color bedsheets. Keep the windows open to allow fresh air coming in.
  • Avoid having chilled water from the refrigerator as there are high chances of catching cold due to the sudden change in temperatures.

HOW TO GET RID OF BLACKHEADS AND WHITEHEADS ON SKIN

It’s a dream come true if you possess clear and smooth skin. Maintaining a clear skin demands time, attention and consistent effort. Very few are blessed with natural clear and beautiful skin. Common problems observed is whitehead and blackhead on the skin.

Ayurveda describes two types of blackheads-darker one: nyachcha and lighter one: vyanga

how to get rid of blackheads and white heads on skinBlackheads are produced due to the inconsistencies in the circulatory system of the body. Blood is impure and leads to formation of blackheads, whiteheads and pimples. To prevent occurrence drink lots of water such the impurities are rejected from the body by urination. Eat Vitamin C containing fruits. Avoid fatty foods.

Ayurvedic treatments:

  • Apply steam on the face. Steaming helps circulation of blood in the facial region and helps blackheads disappear.
  • Abhyanga is a method of oil massage on the face. This must be done before having bath in the morning. This will help remove blackheads, makes skin soft and shiny.

Basic approach to minimize blackheads : Never pinch, scrape, poke, press, or squeeze too hard. This will make blackheads spread.

You can get rid of blackheads and whiteheads by following natural home remedies that are proven. The ingredients are available in our kitchen and home.

  • Tomato – Tomatoes have natural antiseptic properties that dry up whiteheads and blackheads. Peel and mash a small tomato. Apply the tomato pulp to your blackheads and whiteheads before going to bed. Leave the tomato pulp on your face while you sleep and then wash your face in warm water in the morning.
  • Toothpaste – Very effective in the removal of blackheads and white heads.  Apply a thin paste to your infected areas and let it sit on your face for at least 20 to 25 minutes. You will experience a burning sensation when you apply the toothpaste, but this is normal and will pass. Once you remove the toothpaste, the top of your blackheads and whiteheads will disappear. Wash your face thoroughly to remove the buildup underneath. Repeat this home remedy every other day for two weeks.
  • Baking soda – Prepare a mixture of equal parts of baking soda and water and rub it onto your face or other body areas prone to blackheads. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then rinse it off with warm water. Very effective.
  • Rice – Soak rice in milk for 5 hours and then grind this in a blender until it is paste-like in consistency. Use the paste as a scrub on affected areas of the body.
  • Potatoes – Grate raw potatoes and then rub the area with the mixture. Wash it off after 15 minutes.
  • Lemon -Wash your face in warm water. Then, squeeze the juice of one lemon into a bowl. Add in a pinch of salt and stir the mixture. Apply the mixture to your blackheads and whiteheads. Leave the mixture on for approximately 20 minutes and then wash your face with warm water again.
  • Coriander leaves – Mix some coriander leaves (Kothmir) and a little turmeric powder with water and form a paste. Use this as a mask to eliminate blackheads.how to get rid of blackheads and white heads on skin
  • Yogurt – Mix three tablespoons of plain yogurt (curd) with two tablespoons of oatmeal. Add one teaspoon of olive oil and one tablespoon of lemon juice to the mixture. Stir the mixture thoroughly and apply it to the effective area of the face. Let the mixture sit for five to seven minutes then rinse off with cold water.
  • Cornstarch – Mix about a three-to-one cornstarch to vinegar ratio into a paste. Apply it to the affected areas,  let it remain for  20 to 30 minutes. Remove the paste with warm water and wipe with towel.
  • Fenugreek leaves  – Crush some (methi leaves) and mix with water to form a paste. Put this on the face for 15 minutes and then remove it. Do this every night to keep your face free of blackheads.
  • Oatmeal or Almond – Mix either oatmeal (powdered) or badam (almond) powder with just enough rose water to make a spreadable paste. Apply it to your problem areas with your fingertips first and then apply it to the rest of your face. Let it set for about 15 minutes and then rinse your face with cold water.
  • Lime – You can also use equal parts of lime juice and cinnamon powder and apply this mixture to blackheads. Leave it overnight and rinse it off in the morning
  • Honey is also good for removing blackheads. Spread honey on the affected area and remove it after 15 minutes. Do not leave honey for long on the face.
  • A combination of lemon juice, honey and yoghurt in equal proportions can be applied on the affected areas . Wash away after 10 minutes.
  • Ice pack treatment  and cucumber face masks will be helpful  to compress the pores .

Be gentle to your skin. You can avoid the occurrence of blackheads and feel confident.

PANIKOORKA, THE NATURAL REMEDY FOR COUGH, COLD AND FEVER

natural remedy for cough, cold and feverPanikoorka plant is a common sight in most homes in the Southern states of India, especially Kerala. You will find them in the homes where small children are there. Panikoorka is an Ayurvedic herb , the leaves are used for treating common cold, cough and fever in babies and adults. There are references in Ayurveda of the usage of this herb.

The botanical name of Panikoorka is Plectranthus amboinicus . In India it is known as Indian borage, in Hindi known as Patta ajavayin, in Tamil – karpooravalli and referred as navaryila in Malayalam.

Panikoorka is very effective home remedy for cold, fever and cough in children. Leaves of panikoorka is squeezed and the juice is taken. A teaspoonful of Panikoorka juice when given to babies would cure their cough, cold, fever, sore throat, nasal congestion and chest congestion. Panikoorka is a natural expectorant for children. Boil the leaves of panikoorka for 5 mins in 1 cup of water. When cool feed 2 tspn of this decoction to children for curing their cough, and bronchitis.  Adults can take quarter cup of Panikoorka decoction for getting relief from chronic cough and bronchial asthma.   • Panikoorka leaves extract can be mixed with honey and applied on mother’s breast so that infant will suck it when they drink milk. You can also apply panikoorka leaves on child’s lips.
  • Panikoorka leaves extract can be mixed with powdered organic rock sugar (mishri in Hindi, Kalkandam in malayalam ) and given to toddlers for throat infection, cough and cold.

Children:

  • When children complain of stomach pains, problem of worms , you can give Panikoorka leaves extract mixed with sugar three times a day.
  • For relieving cough take a mix of panikoorka leaves extract, honey and lemon juice two times a day.
  • Inhaling vapors with panikoorka leaves extract would cure cold and fever.

Adults:

  • Add few leaves of Panikoorka into the boiling water for steam inhalation when you have cough and cold . If you are using vaporizer , dip a cotton ball into the Panikoorka juice extract and put it in the mouth of the vaporizer.
  • People suffering with gas trouble and flatulence can have heated panikoorka leaves extract with honey twice daily. Grownups suffering from bronchial asthma can consume panikoorka leaves extract mixed with honey and kalkandam.

Panikoorka is a good substitute for oregana flavor in dishes. Can be used to flavor dishes of meat – beef , lamb, etc. Panikoorka is very commonly grown as a potted plant. Indian Borage is a fast growing plant. Propagation is via stem cuttings. The herb grows easily in a well-drained, semi-shaded position.

Panikoorka bajji

Ingredients:

  • Panikoorka leaves 10 – 12 nos
  • Chana powder  -1 cup
  • Onions finely chopped- ½ cup
  • Green chillies finely chopped – 2 tsp
  • Ginger finely chopped- ½ tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Optional : addition of finely chopped curry leaves-1/2 tsp and Kothmir – 1 tsp

Mix all the ingredients. After 10 mins heat oil , dispense the mixture with a spoon into hot oil. Fry till it is brown. Drain bajjis onto tissue paper. Serve hot.
